I like to be truthful and so I begin the conversation by telling the manager that the Lean journey is hardest on managers. I tell them in the beginning that they are going to have to give up the one thing that has made them successful. They are going to have to give up solving problems. Problem solving is the one trait that can move an employee from the frontlines to a management role quickly. But being a traditional problem solver is not what makes a good Lean leader. This is what makes understanding being a Lean leader hard for traditional managers and executives. Believing that it is the manager’s job to fix and solve the problems in the workplace, often stands in the way of Lean transformations because the manager feels pressured to do what is contrary to a Lean approach. “Cornell has led his team to achieve process improvement results through a variety of Lean tool applications. These results include facilitating a team effort to redesign the production line which resulted in delivery times that were previously thought impossible due the constraints of the facility. In addition, Cornell has done the much more difficult job of successfully creating a Lean culture evident by high employee engagement and satisfaction, daily Kaizen and excellent customer satisfaction scores.” Juana, Senior Lean Coach Learning, or unlearning, behaviors that have made one successful in a former role, so that success can be made in a new role, is not easy or natural.
